🌊For most people, emotions go up and down in relation to life’s ups and downs like the waves of the ocean. There will occasionally be large, overwhelming waves, but mostly emotions will ebb and flow in a gentle way.

🌊For people who are naturally a bit more emotionally sensitive, they will feel more vulnerable to their emotional waves. They really feel the ups and downs and can be rocked by them a bit more easily.

🌊Some people who are emotionally sensitive may also have had invalidating social environments (more on these in a later post) or been through difficult or traumatic life experiences. These experiences make it even harder for a sensitive person, meaning their waves are bigger, more frequent and feel more difficult to control.

🌊Remember, there are some real positives about being an emotionally sensitive person. Feeling things intensely helps us to be passionate and engaged in our interests and means we can be easily motivated and motivate others with our commitment and enthusiasm.

🌊Experiencing strong emotional waves only becomes a problem when you don’t know how to regulate your emotions. When you feel that your emotions control you and throw you off course regularly, it can be difficult to live according to your values and reach your goals.

🌊Emotion regulation is not about trying to stop your emotions, but it’s about learning how to control and manage them effectively so you can surf the waves and live life the way you want to. Check out my next post for how to “drop your anchor” when your emotional waves feel overwhelming ⚓️
